Last July, CEC member Daniel Gulchak rode his motorcycle 2,000 miles—from Phoenix to Washington D.C.—to speak with his senators and representatives during the CEC 2017 Special Education Summit. But this member and his motorcycle didn’t stop there.
Feeling empowered after visiting Capitol Hill, Daniel crossed the country again and initiated a similar advocacy event for the Arizona CEC/CASE state units. Why did he make these moves? Gulchak wants special education teachers in Arizona to tell their elected officials how much special education matters. “We plan to share CEC’s national messages to keep public funds in public schools and increase spending on special education as well as local issues during our Special Education Day at the State Capitol,” said Daniel. This inaugural event will take place on Feb. 1 and include 50 special education professionals from Arizona.
But these weren’t the first moves Daniel made as a CEC member. He joined CEC as a student member and that’s when he realized he had a passion for advocating for students with exceptionalities.
When asked what CEC membership means to him, he responded, “I believe that our students deserve to be educated by professionals with factual/evidence-based knowledge and expertise. That is what belonging to CEC means to me—it means that I am a professional.”
